How to Search Hertford County Court Records
Hertford County case lookup now begins with the NC eCourts Portal. The Portal dashboard offers Smart Search for case information, Search Hearings for court dates, Make Payments for certain criminal and infraction matters, and NC Judgment Search for judgment index records. Hertford County became part of eCourts Track 8, so public online records are no longer limited to a local county-only system.
Use Smart Search first when the goal is to find a court case by name, record number, case type, status, or filing date. A record number is the cleanest search key. A name search works too, but spelling, suffixes, business names, nicknames, and wildcard rules can change the result set. For broad searches, set the location filter to Hertford County before opening matches.

Portal access is free for anonymous public searches of available case information. Registration is optional for saving cases to My Cases. Elevated Access is different. It is limited to users with verified authority to see restricted or nonpublic case information.
Types of Hertford County Court Records
Hertford County court records come from Superior Court, District Court, magistrate functions, and the Clerk of Superior Court's estates and special proceedings role. Superior Court handles felony criminal cases, higher civil cases, major equitable matters, jury trials, and some appeals. - Traffic and infraction records: citation number, court date, charge, disposition, fine, cost, compliance, and failure-to-appear status.
What Hertford County Court Records Show
North Carolina eCourts case numbers use an Enterprise Justice format that can include a two-digit year, case-type letters, a six-digit sequence, and a three-digit county identifier. Older Hertford County files may use older numbering rules. The visible fields depend on the case type and access level, but the public case summary usually gives enough information to confirm the file, track hearings, and identify the current status.

That routing page matters because it points court case requests to Portal or the clerk while sending deeds, vital records, law-enforcement records, and other non-court records to different custodians.
Hertford County Court Records Access Laws
North Carolina's access rules use both public-record law and court-record statutes. G.S. 132-1 defines public records made or received by state and local agencies in public business. Court records also follow judicial-branch rules. G.S. 7A-109 requires clerks to maintain records, files, dockets, and indexes and makes them open to public inspection during regular office hours unless the law says otherwise.
For Hertford County, the practical access chain is Portal, courthouse terminal, paper file, and then copy request. Public terminals in clerk offices can be used for criminal case information by defendant name, case number, or victim or witness name. Civil, special proceeding, and estate records can also be searched at terminals. Paper files are viewed in the county where the case is located.

Restricted Hertford County Court Records
Some Hertford County court records cannot be viewed through ordinary public search. Juvenile delinquency records are withheld from public inspection under G.S. 7B-3000. Expunction records are confidential under G.S. 15A-151, and G.S. 15A-153 describes the public-record effect of an expunction order.
Other limits can apply to adoption files, mental-health matters, sealed orders, protected addresses, Social Security numbers, financial account numbers, medical information, minor identities, and confidential law-enforcement material. A person who believes they have party, attorney, agency, or court-order access should contact the Clerk of Superior Court instead of relying on anonymous Portal access.
Hertford County Clerk Record Requests
The Clerk of Superior Court handles trial-court record requests for Hertford County. Use the courthouse for terminal searching, paper file review, cashier questions, certified copy requests, older files, and matters that Portal does not show. Call before traveling if the case may be archived, sealed, expunged, confidential, or not yet fully electronic.
