Why We Built This Site
North Carolina gives the public access to many court and government records, but Hertford County record access is split by custodian. The Clerk of Superior Court maintains trial-court records for Superior Court and District Court, including civil, criminal, traffic, estate, special proceeding, judgment, order, and divorce case files. The Register of Deeds maintains marriage, birth, death, land, map, notary, military discharge, and assumed-name records. The Sheriff's Office handles jail, inmate, process, and law-enforcement functions. State systems such as the NC eCourts Portal and federal systems such as the Eastern District of North Carolina may also matter.

What We Cannot Do
This is a privately run reference site. It is not connected to Hertford County, the North Carolina Judicial Branch, the Clerk of Superior Court, the Register of Deeds, the Sheriff's Office, or any state or federal court. There are real limits to what a private reference site can do:
- We cannot file pleadings, motions, record requests, or courthouse paperwork for anyone
- We cannot issue certified copies of court records, marriage records, vital records, deeds, or estate documents
- We cannot give legal advice or explain how North Carolina law applies to a specific case
- We cannot guarantee that every phone number, fee, office hour, or procedure is current at the moment you use it
Only the court or government office that holds a record can issue an official certified copy. For Hertford County court files, that usually means the Clerk of Superior Court. For marriage, birth, death, and recorded land documents, that usually means the Register of Deeds.
